Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
