Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
