The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from his injury, but further aspects," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
