The Video Platform Offers Users Control to Decrease AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that allows them to lessen the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 thousand million AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is in a pilot phase over the following weeks before a global launch. This advancement comes amid a increase in AI content, spurred by new content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a popular video site primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this output is deemed low-quality AI content, a label for inferior, mass-produced content that is frequently illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to give people the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own choices,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok disclosed that there are now over a billion videos on its app identified as artificially created. Collectively, over 100 million media items are uploaded to the service every day, making AI-generated material a minor percentage of its overall inventory.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be able to reduce or increase the level of AI content they watch by accessing the “manage topic” option in the app and choosing “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting cover politics, style, beauty, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s guidelines oblige creators to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will now add an AI-generated tag to content produced via its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is designed to help prevent users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Educational Initiatives

The company is also launching a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support non-profit groups dedicated to educating programming and robotics.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its safety measures, amid debate over intentions to lay off hundreds of content moderators in the United Kingdom. The company is set to cut 439 jobs in its user protection department in its British office, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it gets reviewed by people. The company reported a significant reduction in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as quickly as possible, which is why a significant AI assistance is proving valuable process content quickly.”
